Weather system may cause area streams and rivers to rise

Warming weather and a chance for rain may cause a rise in local streams and rivers but flooding isn't expected, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A low pressure system is expected to bring rain to the Sierra and Western Nevada through Monday with snow levels around 8,500 feet before falling to 7,000 feet tomorrow night. About an inch of precipitation is expected in the Central and Northern Sierra and about a half inch in Western Nevada.

CarsonWeather.com and the weather service report above average temperatures may enhance the snowmelt and bring a slow rise to local streams and rivers today. Runoff is expected to increase tonight as rain moves into the region.

Although flooding isn't anticipated, the upper portion of the Carson River Basin, especially around Markleeville and Woodfords, could bring the river to its banks, the weather service reports. Cooler air Monday should slow some of the runoff, but another weather system expected Wednesday may impact the region.

The forecast for Carson City calls for continued breezy conditions with a high of 62. There's a 50 percent chance of rain tonight and a 70 percent chance of rain on Monday.
