I’ve been having some fun roaming around on the Internet collecting all kinds of interesting outdoor-type information about Carson City.
And, I thought it would be fun to share that information with everyone who lives here or anyone who might be interested in my home town. So here goes:
01. Did you know that:
The urban portion of Carson City (here in Eagle Valley) has an elevation of about 4,700+ feet, as compared to the highest elevation point in all of the following states and the District of Columbia:
Alabama: Cheaha Mountain: 2,413 feet.
Arkansas: Magazine Mountain: 2,753 feet.
Connecticut: Mount Frissell: 2,380 feet.
Delaware: Near Ebright Azimuth: 451 feet.
District of Columbia: Fort Reno: 410 feet.
Florida: Britton Hill: 345 feet.
Georgia: Brasstown Bald: 4,784 feet.
Illinois: Charles Mound: 1,235 feet.

Vermont: Mount Mansfield: 4,395 feet.
Wisconsin: Timms Hill: 1,951 feet.
Now you know why winter seems so long in our home town, and especially after this last blast of winter weather.
02. Did you know that:
The rural portion of Carson City has an elevation of 9,214 feet at Snow Valley Peak (between urban Carson City and Lake Tahoe), which makes it higher than the highest point in these additional states:
Maine: Mount Katahdin: 5,268 feet.
Nebraska: Panorama Point: 5,424 feet.
New Hampshire: Mount Washington: 6,288 feet.
New York: Mount Marcy: 5,344 feet.
North Carolina: Mount Mitchell: 6,684 feet.
Oklahoma: Black Mesa: 4,973 feet.
South Dakota: Harney Peak: 7,244 feet.
Tennessee: Clingmans Dome: 6,643 feet.
Texas: Guadalupe Peak: 8,751 feet.
Virginia: Mount Rogers: 5,729 feet.
West Virginia: Spruce Knob: 4,863 feet.
So, the next time your favorite pigeon is looking for a bet, why not bet him that the highest point in Carson City is over 9,000 feet in elevation.
He might just bite and you would win this cinch bet.
03. Did you know that:
Carson City has a geographic size of 168 square miles, making it the smallest of all 17 Nevada counties.
On the other hand, Nye County is the eighth largest in the U.S. with 18,146 square miles and Elko County is the ninth largest with 17,179 square miles.
Those two counties make us look like a runt, but we are the state capitol!
04. Did you know that:
Carson City’s record high was on a July day and it was 105 degrees.
Carson City’s record low was on a February night and it was -22 degrees.
Our average annual rainfall is only 11 inches.
Carson City averages 265+ days of sunshine a year (eat your heart out, Seattle and the rest of the Pacific Northwest).
Carson City is one of only two state capitals bordered by another state. We are bordered by California, out in the middle of Lake Tahoe. Trenton, New Jersey is the other state capitol bordered by another state.
Bet Your Favorite Pigeon
Bet your favorite pigeon that he can’t tell you about my favorite sucker bet.
If he groans and says, “Don will bet that it will snow in Carson City during the week of his birthday, which is May 8,” he has lost to me in the past.
I win this particular bet about 80 percent of the time. And, if someone would have bet me, I would have also won this year!
