CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY
After long wait, ‘motivated’ Carson’s boys are finally No. 1
By Dave Price
RENO — Never mind that the Carson High cross country boys had not won a state team title since 1991. Motivated by runner-up finishes in their final race the last two years, the Senators ran their way to the No. 1 spot at the NIAA State Championships on Saturday.
Richard Shroy won the individual gold and the rest of his teammates took care of business as Carson outdistanced Centennial by a 49-56 score to capture the team championship on a mild and sunny day at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. This marked a turnaround for the Senators, who lost to Centennial by one point last year and finished second behind Galena in 2007. Carson also finished third at the 2006 state meet.
