The Nevada Highway patrol reports 22 accidents early Thursday morning due to snow and icy conditions on the roadways. Of those crashes, one was in Carson City near the I-580 freeway onramp and Highway 50 East and another near Spooner Summit on State Route 28. Five crashes were reported in Douglas County.
NHP spent most of the morning responding to and investigating the crashes, most involving property damage with three crashes having minor injuries reported, said Trooper Chuck Allen. One of the crashes took place on State Route 28 near mile marker two, while the only crash reported in Carson City happened at the onramp near I-580 and US 50 East.
As for the Douglas County crashes, two separate crashes and a jack-knifed commercial motor vehicle combination happened on US 395 just south of Garnerville, said Allen.
Another accident happened on US 395 near Johnson Lane, while the remaining events took place on US 50 near Cave Rock and Spooner Summit. Except for an injury reported in one of the Gardnerville events, the remaining crashes were property damage only, said Allen.
In the greater Reno area, 15 crashes were investigated. The area with the highest crash activity was in Pleasant Valley on I-580 near the Galena Creek Bridge. The ten crashes investigated on this section of highway were single-vehicle spin outs where the vehicles struck an adjacent roadway barrier. Two of the crashes at that location involved minor injuries.
Another area that resulted in the temporary closure on westbound Interstate 80 happened on a two-mile stretch of freeway between the state line and Gold Ranch interchange. Five crashes involving a total of eleven vehicles; including one of our NHP vehicles that was struck prompted the closure of the westbound lanes for several hours.
