A strong cold front will move in the Sierra, Carson City and Western Nevada Sunday night bringing strong winds and the potential for snow near the valley floors, the National Weather Service in Reno reports.
Ahead of the front, winds will likely become strong and gusty Sunday afternoon with gusts 45 to 55 mph and locally to 70 mph causing difficult driving conditions and possible travel restrictions for high profile vehicles along Highway 395 and Interstate 580.
The weather service has posted wind advisories for all of Western Nevada and Eastern California. The weather service reports being moderately confident as to snow showers, with the current projected snow levels near the valley floor. Snow amounts will be 1 to 3 inches above 5,000 feet with an inch or less for western Nevada and Northeast California valleys.
Monday morning commuters may see slick, slushy and wet roads through the valleys and into the Sierra. Accumulated snow should melt by 8 a.m. Monday outside of the Sierra, with high country roads clearing by mid to late morning. A short one to two hour duration of poor visibility associated with bands of snow showers is possible, the weather service states.
