One of Northern Nevada’s favorite jazz vocalists returns for her fourth New Year’s Eve performance, Tuesday, Dec. 31 at Café at Adele’s in Carson City.

Since relocating to Reno about five years ago, Barbara Baxter has grown a loyal following among locals who appreciate not only her natural ability, but the heart and passion that comes through in every performance.

“One of the big things that has happened this past year is my involvement with Sparks Rotary Club and even more importantly is that I have been blessed with my work with veterans,” she said. “Music is my passion and in addition to regularly performing at (area venues), I have become involved in singing at veteran’s meetings and events and you know, that truly is a heartfelt thing.” she said.

“Being able to sing for them is a small way to thank and honor them for what they have done for us.”

She has also been performing regularly with Paul January, who plays trumpet, a special treat as the instrument adds something special to the music, though she will be joined by the Abowd’s favorite accompanist, Peter Supersano for New Year’s. She and her musician friends have also been including Don Rae, once a member of The Gaylords, a 1950s Doo-Wop trio, as a way to support him after the passing of his wife.

“This is just a lovely aspect of what happens between musicians, and reminds us, especially during this season, that we are our brother’s and sister’s keeper,” Baxter said.

Café at Adele’s will offer favorite entrees of this past year and several seasonal dishes for the dinner service, as is the New Year’s tradition. Reservations are recommended.

“It is kind of a year in review approach to our food service every New Year’s Eve, we always have a full house for our dinner seating and this gives people a wonderful way to end the year on a note of anticipation for what new adventures lie ahead,” said Chef Charlie Abowd, who, with his wife Karen, co-owns Café at Adele’s. “Barbara is such a talent, and Peter is always a delight.”

Additionally, a menu of light appetizers will be offered, the bar will be open and at midnight, everyone in the house will receive party favors and a champagne toast.

There is no cover charge and reservations are not needed to come listen to the music, which begins at 9:30 p.m.
“We are a family and there is no better thing than to provide an atmosphere of warmth, fun and celebration each New Year’s Eve, as we let go of the last year and look forward with renewed possibility with our Café at Adele’s family, which includes our patrons,” he said. “It is one of my favorite things we do here.”

Baxter, a favorite among jazz enthusiasts throughout the region, and performs at Café at Adele’s as part of the Summer Veranda Series, will sing an assortment of music from Gershwin, Cole Porter and other tunes from The Great American Songbook, sprinkled with a bit of holiday fare.

“This is an event where there is joy and anticipation and love. Lots of love, which God knows, everyone needs a bit of and I am inspired each time I am there,” Baxter said. “It is so important to pour as much love and joy and passion into every moment of living, because this moment is what we have, so that would be my message for everyone now and in the coming year.”
