The Safeway supermarket that has operated on North Carson Street since 1973 will be closing on Nov. 23, according to notice sent out by the company today.

The notice reads:

This morning, we informed our employees of our intent to close this store permanently effective November 23rd.

We have approximately 50 employees (full and part-time). All will be offered positions - at our Reno, Fallon or Lake Tahoe stores, should they so desire to transfer.

We've operated this store in Carson City since 1973 and we have truly appreciated the support of the community.

Our lease at this store site expires at the end of November - and we do understand it has already been re-leased to another business.

I am happy to answer any questions any of you may have regarding this - but I wanted you to be aware of this decision as quickly as possible.

Thank you

Susan M. Houghton
Director of Public and Government Affairs
Safeway Inc - Northern California Division

This is another blow to the north side of Carson City where retail businesses have struggled for survival over the past few years. Several businesses have relocated to the south side of Carson City, such as Michael Hohl Honda-Subaru, Big 5 Sporting Goods and Appliance Outlet.

No word yet on what other business may possibly be leasing out the Safeway space.
