A home was destroyed in the 400 block of Wialaki Street near Mono and South Curry streets in Carson City on Sunday afternoon. One Carson City firefighter was injured in the blaze, officials said.
The fire was reported at 2:24 p.m. and burned the house and about a tenth of an acre of sagebrush on tribal land. It was ignited when slag from a grinder sparked brush during a welding operation, said Bob Charles, Battalion Chief for the Carson City Fire Department. The extent of injuries to the firefighter are not known at this time, but Charles did indicate the firefighter was going to be OK. He was taken to a hospital. The fire forced the evacuation of nearby homes in the immediate area.
With the initial attack, fire personnel on the scene reported the home was burning, along with brush and that before 3 p.m. they were in full knock-down mode attempting to get an upper hand on it. Gallons of a foam agent was used to snuff the flames.
"The home is virtually a loss," Charles said.
An evacuation of homes in the area was launched by fire crews on scene. No other homes burned. There had been light winds in the area and a fire weather warning has been in place for the region by the National Weather Service in Reno.
Southwest Gas and NV Energy were immediately called to the scene after live power lines were reportedly on the ground. Streets had been blocked at South Curry and Mono Lane.
Helping as mutual aide to the fire were: East Fork Fire Protection District, Central Lyon County Fire Protection District, Sierra Fire Protection District, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and Reno Fire Department.
