(Reno, Nev.) In observation of, October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) continue its mission against domestic violence by celebrating its 19-year partnership with Congress in the historic passing of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

On September 12, NCJFCJ’s Chief Executive Officer, Mari Kay Bickett, JD, joined Vice President Joseph Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, at a reception celebrating the 19th anniversary of VAWA at the Vice President’s Naval Observatory Residence in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Bickett joined more than 140 guests from the administration, Congress, and advocacy groups to hear the Vice President speak about the formation of the VAWA legislation, the challenges of reauthorizing it to expand protection to specific groups, and to acknowledge the guests for their contribution to VAWA and its impact to change the silence surrounding domestic violence.

The NCJFCJ and their initiative, the National Judicial Institute on Domestic Violence has been in support of this act since the first VAWA grants were made. This year marks 19 years of progress and judicial leadership in reducing the impact of domestic violence on victims, their children, and their community. The NCJFCJ is proud of having a helping hand in implementing this historic act.

This monumental anniversary of the passing of VAWA is a reminder this Domestic Violence Awareness Month of NCJFCJ’s continuing mission to ensure national justice systems are fully equipped to respond to and protect victims, children and families in domestic violence cases.
