The man who took a Carson City woman out to Brunswick Canyon on the pretense of dumping some old tires but then shot her in the back, and who then fled to Washington State, is back in Carson City, secured in the City Jail charged with attempted murder.
Miguel Zarate-Granados, 30, will face attempted murder charges when he appears for a preliminary hearing July 20th, 3:30pm before Justice Court Judge Robie Willis. Detectives say when the two got out of Zarate’s car, the woman went over to look at a birds nest inside an old mining cave. Zarate then pulled out a gun and shot her once and apparently wanted to shoot her again but the gun jammed. The woman fled toward the river. There Zarate allegedly began bludgeoning her with a big river rock. She blacked out. Zarate left perhaps thinking the woman had died. Another man drove by later and offered the woman help. He transported her to the mouth of the canyon where a Careflight helicopter took her to Renown in Reno where she was kept for about a week and then released.
Zarate fled to Washington State where most of his family lives. He was caught hiding in his own car near Yakima, in central Washington. He was transported back to Carson City Saturday.
