A developing storm system will move into the region beginning late Tuesday and drop into Western Nevada and the Sierra by early Wednesday, the National Weather Service in Reno reports. The system could bring up to a foot or more of snow to the Lake Tahoe area and a few inches to Carson City.
Winds will increase ahead of the storm system along the Sierra front late Tuesday afternoon, with gusts up to 50 mph by early Tuesday night.
Precipitation will move into Northeast California and the northern Sierra Tuesday night and then move into Western Nevada Wednesday morning. Snow levels will fall to near lake level on Tuesday night and then to most of Western Nevada valleys, including Carson City, on Wednesday.
From Tuesday night through Thursday a foot or more of snow is possible along the Sierra crest with amounts of between 6 inches to a foot possible at lake level. Snow amounts will be much less in Western Nevada but some areas may receive a couple of inches. Accumulating snow could lead to travel delays in the Sierra Wednesday and Thursday.
