Mother Nature held out for Nevada Day festivities on Saturday with sunny skies and ideal weather. Today though, that changes.
The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the region as a cold front pushes through. Strong winds and low humidity through Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties and the Sierra will accompany the front Sunday afternoon and evening with wind gusts of 50 mph possible in the Lake Tahoe basin and the Sierra front. Gusts to 65 mph are possible in wind prone areas.
A Red Flag Warning runs from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday night for the Western Nevada Sierra Front. The Wind Advisory extends until 5 a.m. Monday. Rain and snow showers are in the mix Monday and Tuesday with daytime temperatures dropping into the upper 40s and nighttime temperatures below freezing.
In Mono County gusts of 60 mph are expected with gusts to 75 mph are possible in wind prone areas. Sierra ridge gusts of 100 to 110 mph are possible.
Hazardous driving conditions can be expected along U.S. Hwy 395 in Mono County. The combination of low humidity and strong winds will make for critical fire weather conditions. A Wind Advisory has been issued for the Tahoe basin and the Reno, Carson City, and Minden areas from Sunday afternoon through Sunday night.
If you're driving south, a High Wind Warning has been issued for Mono County from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. Please refer to the latest Wind Statement for additional details.
