Word was out today that two local businesses will be closing their doors.
First, there is City Cafe Bakery on South Carson Street. The building they are in was taken over by new owners, and they can't seem to come to an agreement over rent.
I attended a meeting there a couple of months ago where the owner expressed to city officials that she was having problems with the requirements for a very expensive new grease trap for the building's sewer connection, which prevented her from expanding operations to make the business more profitable. City Manager Larry Werner said at the time that they would be looking at issues like this to see if there is something the city can do to not force these kinds of expenses on business owners while not adversely impacting sewage treatment.
We also got word that Oak Furniture Outlet on Highway 50 East would be closing by Thanksgiving because the owner is retiring. That would be another big blow for that area after the closing of Sak N' Save/Scolaris earlier this year.
