UPDATE: Thunderstorms were developing this afternoon east of Dayton and north of Virginia City toward Reno, according to the National Weather Service.
At 4:05 p.m. the weather service issued a flash flood warning for north central Storey County and south central Washoe County. The storm was said to be producing torrential rainfall of three inches ore more in one hour, according to a weather service bulletin. The storm was located south of Interstate 80 near USA Parkway.
The warning is through 7 p.m. and locations in the warning area include but are not limited to Derby Dam and Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center.
Meteorologist Zach Tolby in the Reno weather service office said there is a good chance for the storms to produce strong winds, some lightning, heavy rain and some flash flooding.
"Our main concern today is possible flash flooding in areas where the storm sits in one area for some time or when multiple storms go over the same area," he said.
While not certain, some storms could reach the Carson City area sometime late this afternoon or evening, he said.
There is a flood advisory for northwestern Mineral County through 6:30 p.m. At 3:25 p.m. 1 to 2 inches of rain had fallen in the mountains near Schurz, according to the weather service.
